Explore Browndown – a wild coastal gem

Browndown is a unique stretch of coastal land between Lee-on-the-Solent and Gosport, offering a rare mix of natural beauty and military history. Its habitats and open space makes it a great spot for families, dog walkers, and anyone looking to connect with nature.

Nature at its best

Browndown is a haven for wildlife. You’ll find open heathland, wildflower meadows, oak woodland, and a shingle beach with views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. It’s home to rare butterflies like the Grayling and Purple Hairstreak, as well as birds such as Skylarks and Dartford Warblers. The area is so special it’s been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC). Please keep your dog under close control to avoid disturbing wildlife, and pick up after it.

Historic fortifications and trenches

Browndown is also home to one of the best-preserved World War I training trench systems in England. Covering an area the size of 17 football pitches, it features two sets of trenches facing each other with a “no-man’s-land” in between – just like on the real battlefield.

These trenches were used to train new soldiers in everything from digging and reinforcing trenches to surviving and fighting in them. It wasn’t just about learning skills, it also helped build strength, teamwork, and trust among the troops.

Recent archaeological work has uncovered more about how the site was used, showing at least two phases of trench construction. The layout was designed to closely mimic the Western Front, giving soldiers realistic, hands-on experience before heading to war.

Winter – especially January and February – is the best time to see the trenches clearly, when the surrounding heathland is less overgrown.

Public access for walkers

You’re welcome to explore much of Browndown when not in use by the Ministry of Defence for training exercises. It’s best to check local notices, look out for the red flags or the timetables shared on the Gosport Borough Council Facebook page.
