Gosport’s 53-year-old bus station is being demolished to make way for a new 2,000sqm People’s Park on the waterfront.
Demolition began on the building on 15th September following planning permission, surveys including for asbestos, and other technical requirements.
The site is now being levelled and cleared so that landscaping into a public park can begin. The park will include an overall increase in the number of trees and other planting, and a circular base for a new performance space, among other improvements.
The Council’s aims to open The People’s Park early in the New Year accompanied by food and drink stands and a number of events through 2026.
A planning application for a second future phase of development on the site has just been submitted and will include:
- a new low-rise building on the west side of the park for cafes and bars
- new and improved public toilets – including an accessible ‘Changing Places’ facility
- a new ticket kiosk for the Gosport Ferry
- a bicycle repair concession to further promote sustainable transport options
The second phase of works will commence as soon as phase one is complete, with permanent food and beverage units for bars, restaurants and complementary uses available for occupation ahead of summer 2026.
Councillor Peter Chegwyn, Leader of Gosport Borough Council, said: “The demolition of the old bus station has been a long time coming – but it now frees up an important site for the community to benefit from. The new People’s Park, opening over the coming months, will be a space for residents and visitors to enjoy our historic waterfront – complete with an events space, and cafes and bars.”
