We spend 10 minutes talking to Clare Woodford from The Raw Pet Deli, based in Hardway, about her brilliant award-winning business.

What’s the best thing about being an independent business in Gosport?

The best thing about being an independent business in Gosport is that you get to know your customers really well and can target their needs.

Why did you choose to base your business in Gosport?

I based my business in Gosport as I live locally and it’s a lovely place. You have it all – never too far away from the sea, countryside or popular shopping areas. The people always say “good morning or afternoon ” when passing. You get a real “village” feel when out walking the area. There are some beautiful local dog walks too!

What are you most proud of since setting up your business?

I am most proud of how my little Deli has grown in such a short period of time, I look back on photo’s I took when I first opened in September 2023 with 3 freezers and then look at it now with 8 freezers and the walls brimming with healthy treats and snacks.

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve experienced setting up your business? 

I can honestly say I haven’t really had any big challenges since opening – everything so far has just fallen into place. I have huge support from family and friends, so this does make it a lot easier for me.

What top piece of advice would you give to others starting out their own business?

My top piece of advice would be to follow your passion, know your customers and know your products, research everything to the max to see if it is the right fit for you and your customers.  I don’t sell anything that I wouldn’t be happy to give my dog.

What’s your (other) favourite independent business in Gosport?

My other favourite business has to be T by The Sea, a very dog friendly cafe, Lorraine sells some of the most amazing homemade cakes, lunches and coffee. She’s also helped support me by keeping my cards and packets of treats in the cafe to share with her customers.
