Stokes Bay Sailing Club

Stokes Bay Sailing Club

Stokes Bay Sailing Club is a place where generations come together to sail, socialise and enjoy life by the water.

Founded in 1938 as a small hut on the bay, it has grown into one of the South Coast’s leading sailing venues, home to around 400 members ranging from competitive racers to paddleboarders, kayakers and cold‑water swimmers. Commodore Carl Downing, whose family has been part of the club for decades, learned to sail here as a child, just as his parents did before him. Today, the club offers taster sessions, cadet sailing, and access to high‑quality racing, with members competing at National, European and World level. Even Sir Ben Ainslie trained at Stokes Bay before his Olympic success.

But the club’s real strength lies in its community spirit. With a bar and galley overlooking the Solent, social events, fun days and a growing range of watersports, including wing‑foiling, the club welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Carl describes sailing as a lifelong sport that builds confidence, responsibility and friendships, with members still racing well into their 70s. Run almost entirely by volunteers, the club prides itself on being inclusive, supportive and forward‑looking. As Carl puts it, “People want to be part of the club to experience some of the best sailing in the country.”
